Tomorrows Internet, Today
The essence of Web 2.0 is the ability for users to interact without the "direct" management of the site owner or personnel.  In my humble opinion, I believe that Web 3.0 which is in the process of definition now, will include the ability of the owner of the site to be able to directly manage their store without the web developer in the middle.  This will not be an industry driven initiative, but instead, a USER driven requirement!

A Quick Scenario:

in a "normal" small retail business, the store owner manages the business, from stocking the shelves to washing the windows.  During an average day they might see 200 people in their store.

Based on the work that has been done directly by the owner and the people that work in the store, the owner might see purchases from 50% of these customers, at an average purchase of $10 from each of these patrons, the store would average $1000 per day or $30,000 per month and hopefully make a profit at the end of the year.

The Current Environment (< Web 3.0):

The direct involvement of the owner is missing from the equation.  The Owner is dependent on the web developer to clean the windows, front face the shelves and wash the windows.  The owner, who cares the most about the success of the enterprise is not able to be directly involved in the success or failure of the store.

What About The Customers?:

A small business owner would be very pleased to see 100-300 people a day walk through the front door.  They would jump up meet and greet the customer help them with their needs and build a relationship.

Any web site with PROPER design, development and deployment will achieve a minimum average of 100-300 unique visits a day.  In the current environment, most web site owners do not even know these customers are in their store, they do not know where they came from, what they are looking at, and these customers are never asked if they need assistance.  The VAST majority of these customers will come in the store, look around and leave!

Is that ANY way to run a business?

This Is About to Change.

The popularity of the current versions of powerful, database driven, owner managed Content Management Systems. These systems return direct control to the owner, along with ease of management now sets up a a "more normal" way of doing business.

  • The Contractor builds the store to the specs of the owner
  • The owner takes control of the store and manages it
  • The Contractor is called in only to correct or build additions to the store.
  • Service people are called in to perform functions

The end result will be a standardized, open source content management system (CMS) is that the owner will never again be dependent on or subservient to (or at the mercy of) the web developer.

One item that can help to visualize this is that last December, Joomla.org, released their version 1.12 of their award winning CMS (free and open source), with a developer pool of thousands of contributors Their www.compete.com ranking has risen 5548.5% since the December release of this version.  The version 1.5 is planned to cement in the owner managed concepts.

Web 3.0, with direct owner management and software as a service, allowing direct communication with the customers in the store, will completely redefine the current model and practices of web development and deployment.

Only the Best,

Tom Egan.
